Learn Garden Design from the Experts this
Fall
Educate yourself and
your garden by attending evening lectures in landscape design. The Certificate
of Accomplishment in Landscape and Garden Design (CCALD) is sponsored by Clemson University
Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture in the School of Art,
Architecture and Humanities and will be taught at the University of

What is a
certificate course?
The certificate consists of 7 courses of 6 lectures each that build
in a cumulative fashion toward a fully-expressed program of knowledge in
landscape appreciation, plant materials, construction and planting
design. A design studio is included to teach the fundamental of drawing
plans to scale. A land/study sessions in the field is planned to
nearby garden center or properties as an additional outing. Guests are
welcome to join lectures for a nominal fee.
Format:All lectures are presented in powerpoint and course
material is posted as .jpg images in the Presentations section of this
secure website for convenient downloading by students. This includes
custom design details, plans, design solutions and plant material
reference photographs for 2 zones as well as detailed notes, sources,
reference books and construction guidelines.
Requirements
for Certificate:
Lectures are available on a walk-in basis, but FOR FULL CREDIT AS A
CERTIFICATE, a student must register by individual course. Attendence is
taken and 2 short, open-book tests are given during the 6 lectures for
each course. The 8 course certificate is planned in the Fall and Spring
each year to enable a participant to complete courses begun in 2003. A
Distance Education component is in the works. The design studio is
required for receipt of the Certificate. An e-mail address is required for each participant
in order to receive timely information, invitations to special events
and design studio sessions.

architect in NC, SC, GA, TN & OH and on the landscape architecture

The certificate course offers
comprehensive education in landscape design :
The skill package obtained in the full course enables the
certificate holder to master a large vocabulary of materials and design
principles, as well as the ability to design a home landscape using
structured areas and plantings. Sustainability practices will be
discussed and encouraged. Instruction includes theory of the axioms of
design (art elements & design principles), site analysis, basic
mapping and survey techniques, conceptual plans and programming&
construction practices.

- Homeowners will learn about the four part master plan, how to
work with a designer or contractor, as well as customize and design
their landscape .
- Architects and designers will refine skills required to organize
functional landscape areas and think 3 dimensionally about a landscape
project.
- Garden center staff will better understand clients� needs by
experiencing the big picture of landscape design and construction
- Landscape contractors & builders will attain a high level of
exposure to new landscape construction techniques and a connoisseurship
of ideas and execution.
- Each participant will understand the principles of The Four Part

Instructor: Mary Palmer Dargan, ASLA, CLARB holds a
Master of Landscape Architecture and lectures at Clemson University in
the Department of Landscape Architecture. She appears regularly on
Ground Breakers on HGTV and her work is published frequently in national
magazines including Southern Accents, House and Garden, Veranda, Better
Homes and Gardens. With her husband, Hugh Dargan,ASLA, principal of
Dargan Landscape Architects of Atlanta, they have completed hundreds of
projects in many states. A design firm for over 30 years , Dargan LA�s
extensive archives are housed in The South Carolina Historical Society
in Charleston, SC.

This series of
classes is designed as a 3-month unit to enable a student to achieve A
Certificate of Accomplishment in Landscape and Garden Design. This
certificate involves classroom sessions and homework. Structured for
small-scale landscape and garden design solutions, this certificate
program is geared for practitioners in horticulture, design build,
garden centers, interior designers or homeowners who wish to fully
express the potential of their properties.
There are 8 courses
in this series and include:
1. Landscape
Appreciation (011)The Four Part Master plan is detailed
including the approach and arrival sequence, hub, perimeter and
destinations.
2. History
of Landscape Design (012) The
history of landscape evolution from the earliest form until the present.
3. Design
Techniques (013) Learn how to
design a landscape using structured areas and plants and generate a
basic landscape design. Included are the axioms of design (art elements
& design principles), site analysis, basic mapping and survey,
conceptual plans and programming.
4. Landscape
Plant Materials(014) Botanical
nomenclature; herbaceous, shrubby plant materials and trees, ground
covers and grasses.
5. Planting
Design (015) Understanding
sustainable landscape techniques including soils, styles of garden
design, themes of color, planting details & plant lists, working
with a contractor
6. Construction
I (016)The
Hardscape including brick,
concrete & stone and their uses for terraces and walkways. Design
details, grading and construction techniques.
7. Construction
II (017) Built
Features Structural concerns
including built features such as fountains, lighting, irrigation,
swimming pools and destinations.
8. Certificate
of Accomplishment in Landscape and Garden Design I & II
Design Studio (018, 019) (12
sessions) 1.5-hr sessions. This design studio meets 12 times in extended
sessions to review landscape master plans as they evolve and to put
principles into practice on paper. It is required to receive the
Certificate.
A candidate for CCALD is required to take 011
& 013 before taking the Design Studio. Average time to complete this
course is 3-6 months allowing 2-4 hours a week for course work. The
classes are repeated three times a year either in Cashiers (summer only)
or at The University Center in Greenville, SC (fall & spring)
Lectures may be taken individually and paid at the door.
Each of the 7 courses has 6 lectures for CCALD credit.
Pre-registration for courses is recommended, especially for the (2) 2-hr
Design Studios which are limited to 12 students. A check or Visa
is acceptable at pre-registration ; checks only at the door. . Registration for one course builds
cumulative credit toward the Certificate.
